首先，我要衷心感谢联合国教科文组织给我颁发2005年度吉列尔莫.卡诺.伊萨萨世界新闻自由奖。感谢教科文组织执行局和2005年度世界新闻自由奖国际评判委员会。在风雨如晦、万马齐喑的时候，联合国教科文组织的这一义举，无疑是雪中送炭，对推动中国政治文明进步和人权状况改善意义重大。对于不能到达喀尔领奖，我感到非常遗憾和抱歉。感谢教科文组织执行局同意我委托世界报业协会领奖并宣读答谢词。
借此机会，我还要感谢世界报业协会，感谢记者无国界组织，感谢保护记者委员会，感谢悲愤而沉默的本国行业组织。感谢亚洲周刊和凤凰卫视，感谢华盛顿邮报和纽约时报，感谢美国之音和英国广播公司，感谢美联社和法新社。感谢邱立本先生，杨锦麟先生，何亮亮先生，安.库珀女士，卡维.崇基塔沃先生，比奇女士，布鲁塞尔先生。尤其要感谢正直又可爱的胡舒立女士及其领导的财经杂志：作为中国内地唯一按照独立公正原则报道“南方都市报案”的媒体，北京的财经杂志用底线书写了当今中国的新闻奇迹。

感谢欲哭无泪的亲朋好友和南方都市报、新京报及南方体育所有的同人！去年的这个时候，恐怖无所不在，谎言无所不在，你们坚强而微弱的呐喊所向披靡，吹倒了重重黑幕和巍巍高墙。我还必须感谢那些系铃之后又解铃的政客，如果没有你们的猖狂和愚蠢，我不会得到这个荣誉，而更大范围的冤案也必将以更煞有介事的方式继续下去——在一个法制不健全的社会，什么样的冤案都是办得成的，而且冤案总是显得郑重其事和格外完美。我更要感谢我的战友和难友喻华峰先生、李民英先生，你们的苦难是整个中国的耻辱。美国前总统肯尼迪1963年在柏林墙边的著名演讲中曾说：“自由是不可分割的，只要一人被奴役，所有的人都不自由。”亲爱的喻华峰先生、李民英先生，请你们分享这个时刻！无论在狱中还是狱外，我们其实都在受难，我们永远都是恶性制度的囚徒。对我来说，外面无非是一座更大的监狱，一个“没有天空的都市”。我现在拥有的小康生活，其实是一间丰衣足食的猪圈。
最后，我要特别感谢我的妻子陈君英女士！在黑云压城、大难临头之际，你的镇定、坚强和友善让人吃惊。当8岁的儿子问你：“我爸爸到哪里去了？”，当80岁的母亲问你：“我儿子哪里去了？”你微笑着说：“他出国考察了。那里很自由，是一个美丽世界。”在窃听和监视的鬼影每时每刻笼罩着我们的日常生活，在我被非法秘密拘捕关押的160个日日夜夜，在连续两次抄家的惨剧发生之后，在司法当局非法冻结了全家所有的生活资料之后，你还照常送儿子去上钢琴课。琴声悠扬，而物是人非，母亲来电说刚刚被噩梦惊醒，儿子却正陶醉在美丽世界。
美丽世界！是的，我们需要一个美丽世界。
猪圈不是美丽世界，哪怕是丰衣足食的猪圈。人不应生活在对人权、人道、人性和人味都充满敌意的境遇之中。人必须恢复对人类的认同。
用常识为武器，我们必将摧毁恐怖和谎言编织的梦魇。不要和常识作对。不要和良心作对。警惕卑鄙无耻的政客用真理的名义打击真相，以政治正确之名泻一己之愤谋一己之利。我们要分享各自的人生经验，分享人类文明的成果。
对于我们来说，当务之急是扩大公众知情权、提高政治能见度。这是中国新闻从业人员义不容辞的责任，也是“无权势者的力量”。作为新闻从业人员，你有不说话的权力，但没有讲假话的权力。讲真话不是新闻从业人员的最高准则，而是底线。然而极其可悲，现在这是一条高压线。
所有的问题就是，我们在恐怖和谎言中迷失已久。恐怖无处不在，谎言无处不在——我们在自欺欺人的道路上越走越远。相信在不久的将来，回望过去，我们一定会为这个疯狂和荒谬的岁月感到不可思议。如果对盛行的邪恶习以为常，那么我们就是迫害我们自己的同谋。北岛的诗说：“我们不是无辜的。早已和镜子中的历史，成为同谋。”
请我们从现在起就要对这样的局面感到可耻！
借此机会，我呼吁：让真话回到我们的生活，就像让大地回到我们的脚下！
哈维尔1975年在《给捷克总统暨共产党总书记胡萨克的公开信》中说过这样的话：“如果生命不能被永远消灭，则历史同样也不能被完全阻止。在惯性和假象的深层底下，一条秘密的小河仍在慢慢流淌，缓慢而不为人注意的在侵蚀这深层：这可能是一个很长的过程，但终有一天它会发生：那深层会开始断裂。”
——这也肯定会是我们的未来。
