中国两家最具有改革意识报纸《南方都市报》和《新京报》的总编程益中，最近被指控伙同《南方都市报》前总经理喻华峰贪污公款150万元，被检察机关正式逮捕。3月19日，喻华峰由于贪污的罪名而被判处12年监禁。此案引起海内外一片哗然。喻华峰和程益中的律师许志永对法新社说，中国司法部门对他们指控是没有根据的。所谓贪污150万元，只是他们将报纸的部分利润发给员工作为奖金，而这是中国报界的通常做法。中国新闻人员普遍认为，政府惩罚他们，实是因为这两家报纸大胆直言，触怒了当局，特别是在去年萨斯和孙志刚的报道中，给政府造成强大压力。国际人权组织和总部设在法国的"无国界记者"，对中国政府迫害新闻人员进行了谴责。
